 Events Attended in 2004

Little Downham 27 March
This was a very nice (but cold) start to the season

"Roll Cutter" Gathering 1 - 4 May

Newark & Nottingham Show 8 - 9 May
we decided to cancel this one as they wanted us to pay to attend

Lamport Steam & Country Festival 30/31 May
A nice sized show! We were positioned near the trade stands so not too much noise to distract from the music

Trentham Gardens Stoke in Steam 10 - 11 July
A much improved park which will be great when finished. The only problem we had was that one of the PA speakers pointed straight into our display but was turned round after a friendly word!

Hunstantan 17 - 18 July
Has always been good. The hospitality was first class. Shame about the rain on the Sunday

Welland Steam & country Fair 23 - 25 July
    Turned down for this one

Wymeswold 24 - 25 July
A nice friendly show with plenty of hand turned organs. Weather was perfect.

Lincoln 21 - 22 Aug
A good large show with lots of organs in play Saturday night.
The AOBs had a good display & plenty of interest.

Great Dorset Steam Fair 1- 5 September
This one is not to be missed, it's going to be very busy for us, attempting to
build an organ during the show!!

WE DID IT. The organ was built with tine to spare & not one but two new pieces of music arranged to be played on it. The AOB marquee was busy all the time. This was defiantly a showcase for us.

Widnes Show 26 - 25 September
Is an organ enthusiasts event with about 50 organs,  large and small
The Dorset organ was sold here and all the money will be sent to the Macmillan nurses fund

Chasewater Park 2 - 3 October
applied but did not get a reply!

Donington park model show 18/19 Oct
At this show my 26 note organ gained a commended certificate in the miscellaneous section

John's major key to festive fundraising!

Dec 18 2004

By Alan Harris

MUSIC man John Pettifer is set to bring festive cheer to his Coventry street - by playing carols on a mechanical organ outside his home.

The keen grandad is wheeling his self-built labour of love on to his drive for nightly performances in the run-up to Christmas.

Mr Pettifer, of Ladbrook Road, Eastern Green, says he has already got a fanbase - his neighbours who can't get enough of his tunes!

The 61-year-old is looking forward to the novel "gigs" which will start on Monday, in aid of Myton Hospice.

He said: "The neighbours like it, I've never had a complaint from them - it's quieter than a pop group!"

Mr Pettifer, a former church organist, spent two years making the instrument which is similar to a fairground organ.

The eye-catching music-maker, which is worth about 10,000, features 130 pipes, a glockenspiel and a small drum kit.

Wind is blown through the pipes using an electric blower, aided by a small computer to play the correct notes.

The organ is called ChrisTina in tribute to a close friend, Christine, who recently died of cancer, and his wife, Tina.

Mr Pettifer, a former technician at Coventry University, has previously made two other organs, but is putting the finishing touches to his latest creation.

He will give it a trial run outside his home for about an hour from 6.30pm in the run-up to Christmas.

Any donations will go to Myton Hospice.

Mr Pettifer, who has two grownup children and two grandchildren, said: "The sounds are all working and I'm just painting it up. "It's never been out to the public before so this will be its debut outing."

Mr Pettifer, who belongs to the Amateur Organ Builders Group, aims to hire out the organ for bookings from next Easter.

He attends various steam fairs and country rallies to display and demonstrate his instruments.

He transports his latest creation in a converted trailer, previously owned by the RSPCA, which he bought on auction website eBay.

Details of his organ-building and performances are included on his own website www.petbusker.co.uk
